Rats

Are rats causing nuisance in your home or garden? Then please be aware that these animals cause health risks as well.

In most areas, two rat species are most frequent: the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). Both species are generalists and show great flexibility in foraging, often following people wherever they go, depending on their food and shelter to survive. The brown rat prefers to live close to water and digs its burrows in the ground, often on the sides of locks, but also under buildings or in dense vegetation. The black rat is an excellent climber who does not dig burrows but prefers shelters on elevated locations such as attics or inside of cavity walls.

Rats can transfer infectious diseases to humans, a process called zoonosis. Some of these diseases are:

  • Leptospirosis (which may lead to Weil’s disease)
  • Rabies
  • Salmonellosis (Salmonella)

Rat control requires various aspects to be taken into account in order to solve the problem. The entire situation must be assessed to effectively combat rats. Aspects taken into account include: shelter locations, food availability, structural aspects and possible combatting options. Our experts integrate all these aspects into their prevention and control plan to ensure excellent results.
